FUNGtography - Beauty in a DIFFERENT Light
Fanciful Feathers
Pensive
Famosa Slough, San Diego, California
Roses are red,
Violets are blue.
Black Phoebes are black,
With a little white too.
Dressed to the nines, with a glimmer in his eye,
Mr. Phoebe is ready to steal your heart at the black tie ball.

Bluebird Billowing
Santee Lakes, California
The colorful swirl and imminent elegance of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon come to mind as this Western Bluebird extends his wings to launch into flight. Just as the warrior Chow Yun-fat jumps into aerial acrobatics with flowing robe whipping gracefully around him, this little fellow has his own beautiful billowing skirt to support his defying gravity.

A Reflection of Love
San Diego Bay, California
Romance is in the air! These Horned Grebe lovebirds duck and dive together and ebulliently pop up to the surface in synchrony after finding morsels below. Food sharing is their love language, after all.

Rusty Echoes
Mission Bay, San Diego, California
Portrait perfect! This Say’s Phoebe sure knows how to choose his scene. Long light rays of Winter's setting sun caress his fine feathers, while his warm colors are harmoniously echoed in the links of chain below. Iron oxide has never been quite so beautiful!

Marbled Mobsters
San Diego River Channel, California
Coming in hot! A juvenile Brown Pelican is still dripping – with both water and anticipation – as he makes an acrobatic landing on the rocks occupied by his comrades. In the air, pelicans are agile and effortless as they glide above roiling ocean waves. Landing seems to be a different matter altogether…

Color on the Rocks
La Jolla Cove, California
Birds of the sea tend to be black or white or some shade of grey in between… but Brown Pelicans defy all of that convention and sport fantastically warm reds and yellows and eponymous browns in their breeding molt. They gather in fabulous flocks and flaunt their festive colors. My, what a lovely pouch you have…

The Eyes Have It
San Diego River, California
Those piercing yellow eyes could peer into your soul, but most of the time, they are just looking for a fish to eat.
